The Yankee Classic
"There are TWO couples from DENMARK!.......there are TWO COUPLES from CANADA! ..there is ONE COUPLE from NORWAY! ..there is ONE COUPLE from IRELAND and there are SIX COUPLES from the USA!" So went the M.C.’s introduction of the semi-finalists of the Yankee Classic World Open International Amateur Latin Championships on Saturday night, a fantastic evening showcasing some of the best dancers in the world in competition in the Latin style, and the World Champions in cabaret in the Standard.
As has become the ‘norm’ at Yankee, Saturday night was a complete SELL-OUT! Not an empty chair in the room and the standing room only tickets being sold meant that there also wasn’t a spare inch in the room, which made for an absolutely fabulous and electric atmosphere for the dancers to perform in. And perform they did, producing some fantastic and spectacular dancing, a feast for the audience and judges alike.
Not to be outdone, Christopher Hawkins & Hazel Newberry performed their magical show – and it was a show, not a demonstration – for their audience and ‘wowed’ them from the first minute. We have seen Chris & Hazel perform before but this was truly special, showcasing as it did not only their great talent but their warm personalities too. Thanks go to Angela, Chris’s young lady helper from the audience, her good spirits really helped move things along in an entertaining and lively fashion.
